This was one of the mostly highly recommended Star Wars Canon novels that I have seen, and I have finally got around to it.
Before reading this novel, I have only read the initial Thrawn trilogy by Timothy Zahn, and quickly fell in love with the character of Thrawn. This fascination continued to grow after recently finishing watching Rebels, another highlight of his character (albeit a very different one compared to this novel). He is essentially the Sherlock Holmes of then Galactic Empire, and in this novel we get to see how he rose up to the higher levels of the military
I thoroughly enjoyed this book for many reasons, but the main one was the fact that it shed light on a multitude of aspects within the universe that often do not get much attention.
Although Thrawn is much more than qualified to be a successful member of the Empire, he is an anomaly in the system for a few reasons. First, he is a non-human, which are all but non-existent in the upper ranks of the Empire. Secondly, he is from beyond the outer rim of the galaxy, which is also looked down upon by those from the Core or the Mid-rim planets. Despite all this, Thrawn rises up through the ranks and creates a compelling story while doing so, keeping readers interested every step of the way.
It is clear that Zahn has a strong passion for his characters, so I was very glad to see that this loveable yet hateable Chiss Admiral make his way into the Canon storyline. I loved his role in what I’ve read of the Legends novels, so I’m excited to hopefully see more of him, especially with the rumors of him coming to live action media soon.
Not only does Thrawn shine so brightly in this novel, we also get to see a lot more enjoyable characters, both fresh and familiar. The second favourite character of mine is none other than Thrawn’s initially reluctant aide: Ensign Eli Vanto.
Eli Vanto is a fellow citizen from beyond the Outer Rim, and is also looked down upon many. However, we see him persevere and help Thrawn in their mutual missions in such a successful way that their skill can hardly be disputed. I was so captivated by the duo’s story, and was internally cheering each time they got a promotion and the recognition they deserved! Vanto reminds me a lot of my other favourite Thrawn-adjacent character: Pellaeon. I am super excited to see how his story and career continues, especially following the thrilling end to this story.
As mentioned before, Timothy Zahn has am amazing grasp on the world of Star Wars, and he uses this knowledge in a way that crafts such an elegant story that covers so many aspects of life. One of my personal highlights is how he pulls back the curtain on the political side of the Empire, and how those at the top got there through conniving and deception. This system is expertly shown through the story of Arihnda Pryce, who fans of Rebels will be familiar with. She, like Thrawn and Eli, starts off on the bottom rung, but through perseverance and knowledge of the system, slowly makes her way upwards.
The overarching story of Nightswan and his criminal activities also helps show how oppressive and disliked the Empire’s rule is, and how even the smallest of groups can pack a punch when they need to. This novel had me simultaneously cheering for Thrawn but also those fighting back against the system
Another wonderful thing about this story is the small connections and information given out. We get references to the value of doonium, a sturdy building material, and how it was quickly being scooped up to build the Death Star (unbeknownst to almost everyone). Likewise, we learn a bit more about the Chiss, who I am anxiously waiting to learn more about when I get to the Thrawn Ascendancy novels!
FINAL SCORE : 9/10
Overall, this is an amazing story that details the struggle-filled career of Thrawn and Eli Vanto, and sheds a much needed light onto the greater system of the Empire and the galaxy itself. Thrawn continues to prove himself as being one of the most interesting characters in Star Wars history, and I’m excited to see what the writers have in store for him in the future.
