Weekly Comic Pull List: February 16, 2022

And we are backkkk for another week of panels, pages, and publishers in this installment of weekly comic pulls, this time for the week of February 16th. If you’ve read my past few weeks of pull lists, you might recall me saying they have been rather light in terms of things I’m grabbing. Well, this folks, is my karmic retribution for tempting the pull list gods. We have a rather heavy week, so lets get into it!

Venom #5

Publisher’s Summary: “If you thought the first four issues of the latest volume of VENOM were crazy, all-out action, just wait till you get a load of this one! IN THIS ISSUE, Al Ewing returns to the pages of Venom—AND HE’S BROUGHT ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS WITH HIM!”

Story by Al Ewing, with art by Bryan Hitch

Venom has always been one of my favourite villains in Marvel continuity, cliches be damned. I’ve read some of his solo runs here and there, but after hearing Ewing and Ram V were writing this run, I had to strap in. I’m a couple issues behind, but have enjoyed the things I’ve seen so far, and am excited for more. Seeing Eddie come to terms with being King in Black, and Dylan coping with…well, everything…has been intriguing. I don’t pull many marvel titles, but this is sure to be one of my consistent ones for the near future.

Hulk #4

Publisher’s Summary: “As the mystery behind the Hulk’s shocking new status quo deepens, Banner has piloted the Starship Hulk to an alternate Earth—one where Thunderbolt Ross is president, and he has an army of gamma-powered monsters under his command. Get ready for a surprise-filled, all-out brawl that only the insane minds of Donny Cates and Ryan Ottley can bring you!”

Story by Donny Cates, with art by Ryan Ottley

Wow, amazingly we have a series I’m caught up on. Miracles do happen, kids.

Anyhoo, lets talk green and mean. This run of Hulk has been interesting, without a doubt. I like seeing new takes on old characters, so this book checks of those boxes. However, I’m not the biggest fan of how Cates has been writing Banner, as he just seems more self-obsessed and cruel than usual. A lot of the things I liked in Ewing’s run have been forgotten in this run. But, I can’t deny I’m intrigued to see where the story goes, especially with the upcoming “Banner of War” crossover coming our way in the following months

Iron Fist #1

Publisher’s summary: WHO IS THE NEW IRON FIST?! After giving up his power to save the world, DANNY RAND believes he’s seen the last of the IRON FIST… But when DEMONS begin to attack cities around the world, a MYSTERIOUS NEWCOMER in a FAMILIAR MASK appears, hands blazing with the CHI OF SHOU-LAO THE UNDYING! Who is this NEW IRON FIST? And does his power really come from the DRAGON OF K’UN-LUN… Or from something far more sinister?”

Story by Alyssa Wong, with art by Michael Yg

I am very new to the character of Iron Fist, having only read a handful of his comics before. Seeing this new run start, with a new face behind the mask, I figured this might as well be the point I dip my toes in the story. Will it be a title on my pull list for the long haul? Who knows, but it’s worth a shot.

Either way, It’s always nice to take a breather from the typical heroes we see plastered everywhere. Either way, I’m going to enjoy the ride, no matter how long it ends up being

Animal Castle #3

Publisher’s Summary:

On the Farm all animals were equal. In the Castle some are more equal than others.

With the animals in full revolt, will Miss B. be able to keep her children safe while also trying to provide for them a future in which they can thrive instead of under the hoof of the privileged in power? Or will it all come crashing down as the powerful use their material advantages against those who do the work?

For fans of the bestselling Stray Dogs and the Eisner Award winning Beasts of Burden comes an animal fable at once familiar and surprising! You may think you know the story but set aside your assumptions, this animal uprising is unlike any you have read!

Animal Farm is one of the books I can always go back and re-read, so I knew Animal Castle would be right up my alley. Issue one blew me away, both due to the heartfelt and emotional storytelling, but also because of the jaw-dropping art. I’m slowly becoming a bigger reader of more independent comics, and Animal Castle is consistently at the top of my favourites.

And with that, we have reached the end of this week’s Weekly Comic Pull List, and another damaging blow to my wallet. Alas, we must soldier on and survive until next week. With that being said…

Stay Safe and Happy Nerding!
